Our blood rushes into our heads, the flushing toilet water whirls counterclockwise, everything is upside down, winter is summer, July is January, even the sun stands highest in the North at noon. We are totally confused. A miracle that everyone is still quite relaxed here... Right, we are in Australia, the land of the Ozzy's (which pronounces like the German word for East Germans). Actually, we do believe that we are in America and the earth is not round at all. Everything here reminds us so much of the States, but then the big cars are missing.
Melbourne is our re-entry into Western civilization. Maybe a little social rehabilitation as well, because we stay with friends and are currently learning how to operate the dishwasher and set the breakfast table. Here we indulge between extravagantly filled supermarket shelves, have hot showers for hours (and then be happy that the drainage still works) and discuss the problems of the Western world ('Do we really need a store for dog and cat toilets?'). It's great. The locals may not be as photogenic as in other parts of the world and the culture is not very different from ours, but this is precisely what makes it feel so homely.
For the feeling of the real Australia, we travel together into the wilderness for a few days. The wilderness is actually quite civilized, but then again it is not when you almost stumble over a venomous tiger snake. Australia is the land of the most poisonous animals. How are we supposed to know whether the big hairy spider that crawls straight out of our tent cover is a harmless Handsman or a nasty venomous biting spider? On the other hand, of course, it is a place where you can see cute little ball shaped blue birds with pointy tales do their courtship dance. And beaches. And what beaches! We have to admit, they are the most beautiful beaches that we saw on the whole trip. Huge flat beaches with azure water - the same as on the picture tapestry!
Well, it is very nice here in Australia, so, we will stay here for a while. We will let the sun shine into our coffee cups while we reflect about our best travel experiences and allow the camera in our minds to pan towards the direction of Berlin. At one point everything has to come to an end. But how nice if the end is Melbourne.
